DIFFERNCE BETWEEN COMPOUNED AND MIXTURE

COMPOUND

Compound is a substance made up of two or more elements  chemically combined together in a fixed ratio by mass

Examples

H2O, NaCl, NaOH, SiO2, H2SO4, CaCO3

Mixture:

When two or more elements or compounds  mix up physically without any fixed  ratio, they form mixture

Examples:

Soil ( mixture of clay, sand mineral salts, water

 and air

Air (mixture of  nitrogen, carbon dioxide,

noble gases and water  vapours

Milk: (mixture of water, sugar, fats, proteins,

mineral salts and vitamins

Brass( mixture of copper and zinc metals

MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN COMPOUND AND MIXTURE

Compound

Mixture

It is formed by a chemical combination of atoms of the elements

Mixture  is formed by simple mixing up of substances

The constituents lose their identity and form a new substance  having entirely  different properties  from them

Mixture shows the properties of the constituents

Compounds always have fixed composition by mass

Mixture do not have fixed composition

The components cannot be separated by physical means

The components can be separated by simple physical means

Every compound is represented   by a chemical formula

It consists of two or more components and does not have any chemical formula

Compounds have homogeneous composition

They may be homogeneous or heterogeneous in composition

Compounds have sharp and fixed melting points

Mixtures do not have sharp and fixed melting points

H20 ,  NaCl , CaCO3 ,C12H22O11,  NH3,SiO2

Air, soil, Milk, Brass
